Health Benefits of Swimming Pool Workouts

There’s a reason why you see professional athletes often work out in swimming pools. Swimming provides a great exercise avenue like no other. Below are some of the best-known benefits of performing swimming pool workouts, besides simply swimming for enjoyment.

You can do more with less – Swimming pool workouts train the human body to exert itself purposively and effectively without harsh impact to the skeletal system, which is typically experienced while training above ground. When the human body is submerged in water, the body automatically becomes lighter; a person submerged to the waist, for instance, only has to support 50 percent of his weight, while a person submerged to the neck has only to bear 10 percent of his weight.

Chronic illness relief – People with chronic diseases like arthritis can look to pools for a good, strain-free workout. Water-based exercises improve the use of affected joints without worsening symptoms. For instance, people with rheumatoid arthritis have been found to exhibit better health improvements after hydrotherapy than those who didn’t engage in the latter.

Lowered stress levels – A short dip in itself can be enough to relieve stress. Doing so triggers the release of the body’s so-called “feel-good” chemicals known as endorphins, which induce a natural “high” that contributes to relaxation.
